HOLIDAY MOVIE GUIDE: New Year's

2009 is coming to an end. [insert sad violin music] And, if you are staying in, celebrate the oncoming year by watching movies where some part of the world is destroyed (usually it is New York. Unfair, I know). It sounds morbid, but it is more of a celebration that the Earth survived another year and sticking it to the crazies on the street holding "The World is Going to End" signs. Yay!

Get Ready for the Apocalypse Movies:

Independence Day (1996)
2012 (2009)

LIMELIGHT: Scream Queens

In honor of Halloween weekend, I created a TOP 10 list of my favorite scream queens. Thanks to their steel-iron lungs and abilities to make blood curdle and send chills down spines, the horror genre is able to produce a bloodier and gorier perspective to fairytale's damsel in distress and big bad wolf.

TOP 10 SCREAM QUEENS

  1. Jamie Lee Curtis - Halloween (1978), The Fog (1980), Prom Night (1980), Terror Train (1980), Roadgames (1981), Halloween II (1981), Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998), Virus (1999), Halloween: Resurrection (2002)

  1. Fay Wray – The Original; Doctor X (1932), The Vampire Bat (1933), Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933), King Kong (1933)

  1. Neve Campbell - The Dark (1994), Scream (1996), Scream 2 (1997), Scream 3 (2000), Scream 4 (2010)

  1. Shelley Duvall – The Shining (1980)

  1. Heather Langenkamp - A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994), Freddy vs Jason (2003)

  1. Shawnee Smith - The Blob (1988), Saw (2004), Saw II (2005), Saw III (2006), Saw IV (2007), Slaughter (2008), Saw V (2008), The Grudge 3 (2009), Saw VI (2009)

  1. Marilyn Burns - The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Helter Skelter (1976), Eaten Alive (1977), Kiss Daddy Goodbye (1981), Future-Kill (1985), Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1994)

  1. Erica Leerhsen - Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (2000), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), Wrong Turn 2: Dead End (2007), Living Hell (2008), Lonely Joe (2009), Slaughter (2009), The Message (2009), Shiver (2009), The Fury (2009)

FILM REVIEW: Karyn Kusama’s “Jennifer’s Body”

Surprisingly, “Jennifer’s Body” is performing poorly at the box office. The movie has only raked in $12.4 million in two weeks, while the children’s animation “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” has pulled in $60.4 million in two weeks. “Jennifer’s Body” was expected to do much better due to the sultry Megan Fox and Diablo Cody’s screenplay behind the project.

Despite, the harsh criticisms and cold reviews, I think “Jennifer’s Body” is worth seeing. First of all, yes, Megan Fox is hot and the younger version of “bad ass” Angelina Jolie. Second, Diablo Cody’s screenplay is hilarious, a bit crude and risqué. Third, the trailers revealed the movie’s potential to be a fun, not at all serious, horror flick. What else could be expected from such a lineup?

The dynamite duo Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried had the whole yin and yang going for them. Fox’s character, “Jennifer” is the beautiful (and slutty) every-girl-wants-to-be-me-and-every-guy-wants-me girl in high school. And, in contrast, Seyfried’s character, Needy is the awkward-but-somehow-still-cool-enough-to-hang-out-with-the-hot-girl chick in high school. The plot feeds on the imbalanced relationship created by the characters’ social status and personalities. It is the film’s constant battle between innocence and immorality.

Speaking of the plot, Diablo Cody’s writing in “Jennifer’s Body” is like a murdering sex-fein rewriting “Juno” (2007). Jennifer, the man eater (literally) has some awesome lines audience members may just incorporate into their everyday lingo, [Jennifer grabs Needy’s breasts] “These are like smart bombs, you point them in the right direction and shit gets real.” Needy has her fair share of equally entertaining lines, but her exaggerated emotions and dramatized actions is what makes the character a gem.

I guarantee you will laugh, definitely not scream or cower in fear, while watching “Jennifer’s Body.” Definitely see it with your friends, or on a date, depending on your interests.

FILM REVIEW: Anne Fontaine’s Coco Before Chanel

Coco Chanel is already an icon in fashion, but now she has been introduced to movie lovers everywhere. Anne Fontaine’s “Coco Before Chanel” (2009) gives a look into the life of the young woman before she set the standards of chic and classy. The movie is sophisticated, smart and beautiful while keeping raw and edgy elements.

Sure, the entire movie is in French and you are stuck reading subtitles, but that does not detract from the emotional and cutesy scenes. The audience will witness the determination and fire burning inside a young woman, the relationship between two sisters, the troubles of loving outside a social class, the boundaries and classifications created for women and men, and the need for independence. It is a biography meets documentary meets coming of age story.

Audrey Tautou transforms for the role. She incorporates quirky and strong traits from her characters in “Amélie” (2001) and “The Da Vinci Code” (2006). Tautou is amazing as Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel. She breathes life into a vintage icon for a new generation. Young women will be inspired to follow their dreams, and to break free from limitations and opposition. They will want to be fierce and fearless like Chanel. They will want to make their own name. Women may even want to burn their bras, learn to speak French, and pick up a pair of scissors and a sewing kit.

“Coco Before Chanel” is a definite must-see for all young women, Chanel No. 5 fans, couture lovers, and aspiring clothing designers. This movie is for anyone who wants independence, or just enjoys an intriguing biography. Go with your girlfriends, or make it a mother-daughter movie night. See the movie, and then go shopping.

FILM REVIEW: Final Destination 3D vs. Halloween 2

“The Final Destination” (2009) may be leading in the box office, but are audiences walking away from the theater more satisfied from “Halloween 2” (2009) or “The Finale Destination” (2009)?

This time around, “death saved the best for 3D.” Typical to the Final Destination series, there are explosions, imaginative gory deaths, and bad gut feelings. However, there is really nothing special going on. Sure it raves that this installment is in 3D, but seriously, director David R. Ellis could have done better. There is definitely not enough in-your-face action. Wearing 3D glasses for almost two hours, audiences want more than a few every so often objects (including organs) to duck from. The opening car crash scene is about all we can expect to get good use out of 3D. Besides the disappointment, The Final Destination is still fun to watch. And it makes me feel better that the ending is different.

Rating: 3 ½ Duck-and-Screams out of 5

Rob Zombie does justice to the horror series. “Halloween 2” (2009) is a mentally disturbing, gory and gritty slasher film. It is a psychological thriller with graphically violent elements; think “Silence of the Lambs” (1991) meets tons of blood. Audience get a sense of how Michael Myers came to be the most feared murderer in the film, and how his killing spree affects persons involved. The film does not just present us with this crazed psycho killer, but it shows us a man who is desperate to reunite with his dead mother. Also, the other characters in the film seem more realistic. Laurie Strode has to see a psychiatrist. Dr. Samuel Loomis is motivated by greed. Not so happy-go-lucky in this flick.

Rating: 4 ½ Blood-curdling Screams out of 5

Looks like Rob Zombie’s “Halloween 2” (2009) wins. Which movie do you prefer?

FILM REVIEWS: Summer Quickies

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (June 12th) –Denzel Washington and John Travolta are quite funny in this somewhat suspenseful movie. The characters are compelling, and the writers developed an interesting plot. I enjoyed the movie, though I expected more action. Maybe the actors are just getting too old to keep up with the adrenaline rush. I heard the original, Joseph Sargent’s “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three” (1974) was better. But, I have yet to see it for myself.

Rating: 2 ½ gasps out of 5

The Proposal (June 19th) – Besides the obvious markers of Sandra Bullock’s age, her acting has neither improved nor worsened. I suppose that is a good thing. The movie is an entertaining summer romance, adding flame to the cougar trend (older successful women dating younger men. Think Mrs. Robinson in “The Graduate”). Expect a few good chuckles, but not too many memorable lines. At least Ryan Reynolds can serve as eye candy during the movie.

Rating: 3 kisses out of 5

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (June 24th) - OMG, this movie is as expected, awesome. And of course Shia LaBeouf is hilarious, with some added help from Julie White, Ramon Rodriguez and John Turturro. Michael Bay did not skim on the action either. The fight scenes left audiences’ hearts pounding, and begging for more. Too bad with all the attention placed on the action and comedic lines, the story line felt a blow. The plot could have been a bit stronger. Oh, and did I happen to mention all the hot people in this movie? Well, there are quite a few to keep ogling eyes busy.

Rating: 5 Whoas-that-was-cool out of 5

Brüno (July 10th) – Is there a movie that can make an audience feel more uncomfortable than “Brüno?” Granted, “Borat” (2006) was a bit off putting, but at least it was hilarious. “Brüno” hits new levels of distaste. It is shocking in a bad way. A few people from the audience actually walked out. Sacha Baron Cohen tried too hard with this screenplay. Comedy should be effortless. Better luck next time Cohen.

Rating: 1 ½ uncomfortable-laughs out of 5

Orphan (July 24th) – “Orphan” is an interesting horror flick. It lacked in stimulating fear, but it did keep the audience on their toes. There was probably more anger in the theater directed toward the audacity of the little girl, Esther, on the screen. Actually, the acting is pretty believable, especially child actors Isabelle Fuhrman (Esther), Jimmy Bennett (Daniel) and Aryana Engineer (Max). The kids carried the movie. Oh, and I think you may really enjoy the ending. It is a shocking surprise you may or may not figure out before it ends.

Rating: 4 shrieks out of 5

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (August 7th) – “G.I. Joe” is a non-stop and fast paced (including some slow motion stunts to emphasize how gravity is suspended) action flick with great fight scenes and a nice compelling plot. Oh, and let us not forget the numerous hot shirtless guys and chicks with killer bods. The movie leaves audience panting for more action and more glimpses at Victoria’s Secret model Karolina Kurkova, Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Byung-hun Lee, Marlon Wayans and Rachel Nichols.

IN REMEMBRANCE: John Hughes (1950 – 2009)

Mrs. Robinson You’re Trying to Seduce Me remembers the iconic contributions John Hughes has made to film and some of our childhood/adolescent years (80s). He has written and directed some of the most memorable movies. Movies that are often quoted or referenced in pop culture.

Hughes is well known for working with the Brat Pack (Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Andrew McCarthy, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy) in “Sixteen Candles” (1984), “The Breakfast Club” (1985), and “Pretty in Pink” (1986). He also brought us “Weird Science” (1985) starring Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith, “Ferris Bueller's Day Off” (1986) starring Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck, and “Home Alone” (1990) starring Macaulay Culkin and Joe Pesci.

Of course the list is not limited to the movies above. We have probably all seen at least one of his coming-of-age or comedic family movies. And we have all probably related to one of his characters, “fallen in love” with one of his characters, and emulated one of his characters. For me, I saw myself in Claire (“The Breakfast Club”), simply adored Ferris (“Ferris Bueller's Day Off”), and mimicked Kevin (“Home Alone”).

Remember the movie legend, John Hughes.

RIP

(1950 - 2009)

“You see us as you want to see us - in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. You see us as a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal. Correct? That's the way we saw each other at 7 this morning. We were brainwashed.”

“The Breakfast Club” (1985) – written and directed by J.H.
